Barb Orosz has always had a great love for, and relationship with dogs, and it was 10 years ago that a friend suggested she become a professional dog trainer. It was then that Barb began school in Columbus Ohio, at National K-9 Professional Dog Trainers. After graduation, Barb opened her own business called “Doggie B Good”. Her training skills included both on leash and off leash obedience, scent detection, tracking, search and rescue, and service dog.
Aside from owning her own business, she also volunteers as a trainer at Porter Counties 4-H dog project, where obedience training is a major part of a kids learning how to handle their dogs. Barb currently owns three of her own dogs, Bentley a Bichon, Bailey a Westie, and her business partner, a seven year old big black Dutch Shepard named Blackjack.
Barb and Blackjack are currently volunteer members of Therapy Dog International, which provides therapy in a variety of different settings: hospitals, schools, nursing homes, hospice, and private homes. Barb shares that this service allows for “emotional and physical support to any age group”. The people that benefit most in these settings are those suffering from anxiety, depression, and/or loneliness, or who just need comfort in some way.
Barb has witnessed improvements in patients, as a result of their interaction with Therapy Dogs. One patient, in particular, who suffered from a stroke greatly increased his bending motion and movement in his arms and shoulders while playing fetch with Blackjack. Patients in wheelchairs are often given Blackjack’s leash to “walk” him down the hallways. Barb’s passion for dog therapy is rewarded through the heightened emotions that are evident when the patients get to visit with Blackjack, making the team one of our Sensational Seniors.
